Guidelines for Submission of Manuscripts to the Revista Mexicana de Psicología
In the Revista Mexicana de Psicología, we publish original quantitative research articles. We do not publish descriptive studies or literature reviews. Other contributions are published by invitation only.
Manuscripts must be unpublished, that is, they must not have been previously published. Consequently, we do not accept “prepublished” papers (preprints). As well, we do not publish partial papers from a larger research unless it is ethically justified to publish such research in a piecemeal fashion.
As a requisite, the manuscript must comply with the following:
* Literature reviewed in the introduction must be current, that is, recently published (i.e., 60% or more published during the last 8 years).
* Literature reviewed in the introduction must be international and exhaustive.
* The introduction must clearly justify the importance of the research problem, which must derive directly from the critical review of the relevant previous research.
* The critical review of research relevant to the research problem must point out the conflicting results, knowledge gaps, or lack of knowledge that the study has intended to solve.
* The formulation of hypotheses or research questions must clearly take into account the study variables and be directly linked to the research problem.
* The hypotheses or research questions must clearly state the direction of relationships between variables based on the critical review of literature included in the introduction.
Every manuscript submitted to the Revista Mexicana de Psicología for publication must firstly abide by all the guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020). In our journal, we use a slightly different style to APA’s. Therefore, after preparing the manuscript according to the Publication Manual, make the following modifications and check the following details.
Format and Organization
The manuscript must be submitted in a single Microsoft Word document or a file compatible with such program; other formats are not accepted. The document must be editable (i.e., with no additional formatting instructions and no password or other protection). The document must not exceed 7,000 words if the research consists of a single study or 10,000 words if the research comprises two or more studies. The first page must include the paper title in both English and Spanish, each author’s name and institutional affiliation (composed by area, department, or school, plus institution and country, to which the author belonged during the research conduction), and the author note. This note must comprise the following elements:
* A statement on conflicts of interest. If there are no conflicts, please indicate so.
* A statement on the funding of the research and the paper. Identify the support received and the sponsor. If no funding was received, please indicate so.
* The acknowledgements you wish to make to other people for their contributions to the research or the paper, in no more than 50 words.
* The email address of the corresponding author.
The second page must repeat the paper title and include the abstract and keywords in the language the manuscript is written in, either English or Spanish. The third page must show an accurate translation of the title, abstract, and keywords into Spanish or English, according to the case. The abstract must include the research problem, the research aim, the methods, the primary results, and the most relevant implication of results for theory or practice. The abstract in English must range between 100 and 120 words. Usually, the equivalent Spanish version would be approximately 150 words long, but such length may vary. Keywords must be five and should not repeat terms or word roots already included in the title or abstract. This guideline is due to specialized search systems feeding on the title, abstract, and keywords, often without distinguishing between such elements; if there are different words in all of them, the likelihood of potential readers retrieving the article from specialized databases will increase.
Subsequent pages must show the main text of the manuscript, the sections of which must be written and ordered strictly following the Publication Manual (APA, 2020) guidelines. Tables, figures, and appendices must be included in the same document, after the main text, in such order, and each in a new page.
For uniformity, all continuous data must be presented to two decimal places (of course, data taken from previous literature are excepted if they were published to just one or no decimal places). Only for statistics requiring greater precision, one more decimal place may be added, always taking into account the manuscript consistency.
In addition, the text must always present the exact p-values (e.g., “p = .45”, “p = .03”), instead of cutoff points (e.g., “p > .05”, “p ≤ .01”) or nonsignificance notes (e.g., “ns”). For tables and figures, the same guideline must be followed unless clarity decreases.
Usage of terms in languages other than the language the manuscript is written in, either English or Spanish, must be avoided. Whenever a term or phrase in the manuscript language exists for the same idea, prefer it instead of that in the other language. In the case of neologisms or concepts relevant for the manuscript, both denominations, in the manuscript language and in the other language, may be used the first time the concept is mentioned, in order to associate them. However, thereinafter only the term or phrase in the manuscript language must be used.
Submit your manuscript, including the cover letter and any other documents accompanying the manuscript, to the following address:
Be sure to include in the cover letter the following information:
* Each author’s ORCID ID; otherwise, present another international ID you have as researchers.
* Notes on changes of affiliation, if any.
* A statement, under vow to tell the truth, that the manuscript is unpublished and has not been submitted, and will not be submitted, to any other review process while it remains submitted to the Revista Mexicana de Psicología. In this regard, whether the authors would like to withdraw the manuscript, they must request it. As long as we do not affirmatively answer to such request, it should be understood that the manuscript is still submitted to our journal.
* A statement on
a) the origin of raw data, including the identification of the project or source;
b) the existence or not of previous publications reporting on all or some of the manuscript results (e.g., other journal articles, a book, a dissertation or thesis, a conference presentation or poster session, a press release, an interview, a blog post, etc.), including references for such sources; and
c) the existence or not of other publications related to the manuscript (e.g., publications derived from the same project or database even if the objectives or analyses were different), including references for such sources.
* A statement on the availability or not of the data and materials used. If they are freely available, provide the web address from which they may be retrieved. If readers should request available data and materials from the corresponding author, indicate so. If the data or materials are not available, or not all of them, please specify which ones are available and why all else are not.
* A statement on your abiding by the universal ethics principles ruling the conduction of research in psychology, including assurance of confidentiality and obtainment of participants’ informed consent (consult the Código ético del psicólogo; Sociedad Mexicana de Psicología, 2010).
* The name of the ethics committee approving the research conduction, as well as the number and date of approval.
* Responsibility disclaimers, if any is required.
* Statements on special circumstances, if any.
* A statement on the specific contribution of each author.
* A statement on all authors consenting to appear as authors of the paper.
Phases of the Editorial Process
Phase 1: Initial Screening
Every manuscript submitted to the Revista Mexicana de Psicología undergoes an initial screening before being assigned to expert reviewers. The screening is the first step to distinguish all works that (a) are not consistent with the journal aim and scope, (b) show relevant flaws in their content quality, or (c) do not abide by these guidelines. In such cases, we send the manuscript back to the submitting author without sending it to double-blind peer review. Estimated time to accomplish this phase: 1 week.
Phase 2: Double-Blind Peer Review
Once the initial screening is overcome, we assign the manuscript independently and through a double-blind procedure to three reviewers with expertise in the manuscript topic. Reviewers may be members of the journal editorial board or special guests. Estimated time to accomplish this phase: 3–8 months.
Phase 3: Editorial Decision
The editor-in-chief makes the editorial decision based on at least two reviews, three in controversial cases. The decision may be either (a) acceptance conditional on modifications to be made on the manuscript or (b) rejection. We inform the submitting author on the editorial decision by written along with the anonymous comments from the expert reviewers. We do not provide details about the editorial decision and it is unappealable. Estimated time to accomplish this phase: 1 week.
Phase 4: Manuscript Modification
Whether the editorial decision is acceptance conditional on modification of the manuscript, it is the authors’ responsibility to modify the manuscript according to the reviewers’ comments and timely submit the resulting version. Estimated time to accomplish this phase: 1 month.
Phase 5: Checking of Changes in the Modified Version
After receiving the modified version, we check the changes made and prepare the manuscript for editorial production, including the scientific copyediting (i.e., a copyediting based on the Publication Manual, APA, 2020, and the journal variations from it). We seek to solve with the submitting author the omissions, discrepancies, and other issues we find, and only if the reviewers approve the result, we definitely accept the manuscript. Estimated time to accomplish this phase: 2 months.
Phase 6: Editorial Production
Once accepted, the manuscript undergoes copyediting (in English and Spanish) and laying-out, and online versions are prepared. Estimated time to accomplish this phase: 3 months.
Phase 7: Publication
In January or July, as the case may be, we publish the issue including the article. The submitting author receives an email with the full issue, the individual article, and the web address from which the article may be accessed online.
Transfer of Copyright
In the event that we accept the manuscript for publication, the copyright owners must transfer the copyright to the Sociedad Mexicana de Psicología, A. C., and the Colegio Mexicano de Profesionistas de la Psicología, A. C., to edit, publish, reproduce, distribute copies, prepare print, electronic, or multimedia derivatives, and include the article in national and international indexes and databases.
